Kournas Old Village, Georgioupolis Crete
This taverna is famous in the area for the quality of the food
served. At weekends in particular the local people flock from the towns to enjoy
an afternoon of relaxing and dining at this popular location. It even has a
mention in the ‘Crete Rough Guide’ which has put it on the map as far as
tourists are concerned.
This is an all year round taverna which really comes into its own during the
long summer months when the bend in the village street becomes the favourite
place for outdoor eating. The tables are set under the mulberry trees in a bend
in the road at the centre of this typical Cretan village. Should the weather be
inclement {not very likely} then there are of course inside facilities.
Kali Kardia offers traditional taverna food, not fast food, but good food served
quickly. The menu can vary daily and it is best to ask Babbis what is available
that day. Vegetables are always fresh and they specialise in various types of
delicious salads. Usually on offer are of course pork chops, local sausages,
meatballs, smoked ham, chicken, lamb chops, lamb souvlaki, pork souvlaki All of
this delicious food is cooked on the outside charcoal grill before your eyes,
the smoke giving the food a flavour of its own. A dish you should try is sautéed
lamb with onions. Various traditional sweets are available, and the whole lot
can be washed down with delicious local red or white wine or beer.
You will be pleasantly surprised when it comes to paying the bill because the
prices are also traditional, not increased for tourists. Kali-Kardia relies on
the food and service, and word of mouth to generate business, and prices are
kept low as a result of this policy
The atmosphere tends to build up as the tables and chairs get filled with the
staff Irini and Vicki rushing backwards and forwards in the small kitchen
preparing the dishes to order. Somehow through all the chaos, Babbis remains
calm and has time to chat with old and new friends as he serves.
This popular taverna remains open during the whole year but of course the dining
will be inside with a log burning stove providing warmth. |
