Aghia Galini (Agia Galini)
Originally a small fishing village, Agia Galini with its streets of
white painted houses crowded on three sides by mountains, opens onto an
attractive harbour which still maintains its typical Cretan appeal.
The location of this small seaside village is ideal as a stepping off point for the various "must see" parts of this wonderful island.
Although compact the village offers all the facilities that one would
hope for and all within a stones throw of your accommodation. There are
supermarkets for your daily needs, numerous tour operators offering very
interesting excursions to this historic area, quiet tavernas with
spectacular views over the Libyan sea, and various boat trips to
secluded coves, islands, and seaside villages. There are now a number of
Cash Point machines in Aghia Galini which dispenses cash
in Euros within the Cirrus banking network which include Maestro, Mastercard, Visa and all the usual
credit cards. Nearest bank would be in
Spilli some 16 kms
away.
The beauty of Aghia Galini is in its geographical position
as there is something to please everybody. For the energetic, a short walk
along the beach brings you to the water sport section where you can
indulge your tastes with parascending, water skiing, jet skis, and of
course the never to be forgotten banana rides.
For the more relaxed exercise, just enjoy a drink at one of the many
tavernas lining the harbour and watch everybody else enjoying their
interests.
There is a very good public transport service to the main towns of
Rethymno, Chania, and Iraklion, all of which make an economic day out.
The scenery on all of these bus trips is spectacular so bring a camera
with you. Both Chania and Rethymno are well worth visiting for their
museums and Venetian harbour areas. Iraklion being more cosmopolitan has the
most comprehensive archaeological museum imaginable and is a must for
those seeking further knowledge about the ancient Cretan civilization.
In the evening after an exhausting day in the sunshine, enjoy a meal in
one of the many tavernas and restaurants which line the harbour and
village centre. One street in particular is known as restaurant street
because of the number of eateries available. Local Cretan food is always
superb and a must for the new visitor to try. For the less adventurous,
(all fish caught locally). try the excellent fish dishes . There really
is something to suit all tastes.
Work off the evening meal by strolling past the numerous shops in the
warm night air. Craft shops are especially interesting for that
something a little unusual to take back home as a reminder of your
wonderful holiday.
Still feeling energetic? then try one of the many bars offering disco
music until the early hours. Failing that , return to your
accommodation, close the shutters and prepare yourself for the next day.
We would recommend car hire to enjoy fully the wonderful scenery,
spectacular gorges (the nearby Samaria gorge being the most famous) and
the lovely un-spoilt beaches.
