The old name of Georgioupolis was Almyroupoli,
named after the river Almyros by which it stands. It's a
beautiful village situated on the northern coast of Crete, about
35km away from Hania and 20 km from Rethimno with a
backdrop of spectacular mountain scenery. Ancient eucalyptus trees
surround the village square amidst the tavernas and gift shops.
The village boasts 2 large supermarkets, many smaller minimarkets,
a bakery, pharmacy, and a cashpoint machine. Many shops sell
local products which make interesting gifts or keepsakes.
Car hire is available from several agencies for those who like to
travel further a field. Day excursions can be arranged from the many
village agents. Why not go on one of the local boat trips up the
Almaris river to see the terrapin colonies, or even a leisurely
ride round the area by horse drawn carriage.
500 yards inland along the river is a riding school run by Kristen
and George, telephone number Georgioupolis 61745. Remember, you
must make reservations 2-3 days in advance to enjoy this popular
activity. Horses and ponies only available for riding early morning
or early evening because of the midday heat. Ask your apartment
owner for specific directions.
There are regular buses which run along the new main highway to the
attractive towns of Rethymno and Chania both of which are
extremely interesting with their many shops and attractive Venetian
harbour areas.
The long sandy gently shelving beach is ideal for those lazy days
in the sun and very safe for children however we would recommend
close supervision at all times. When you have worked up a thirst
sunbathing just stroll over to one of the many tavernas lining the
beach and enjoy a nice cool drink.
Georgioupolis is a small lively self contained village with
something to suit all age groups. The scenery is stunning with the
mountains and the river, the beach idyllic and close to town. The
village square and tavernas are the focal points for evening
entertainment.
A cafe/cocktail bar nearly opposite on the corner in the village
square. Call in for that welcome drink after a hard few minutes
shopping or on your return from the beach. You are sure of a
friendly service from the staff. Children are especially
welcome.
Annes supermarket is a must for the visitors day to day shopping.
Bread is delivered daily, a wide range of fresh fruit and
vegetables are available, as are a whole range of products to
fulfil your every requirement. Open until 9.00pm during the summer
months.
Cash point machines (ATM's) are available.
