In Greek mythology it was Poseidon that gave a bull to Minos the king of Crete, as a sacrifice. Instead Minos kept it and his wife fell in love with it and had a child by the bull which was half man and half bull. It was given the name of Minotaur. It was this Minotaur which was shut up in a labyrinth beneath the city of Knossos. Later on, after Minos's son was killed by the Athenians in a war, Minos demanded that they gave Minotaur a sacrifice of young people as a tribute. Theseus was sent as one of the tributes and eventual killed the Minotaur, the only way in which he found the way out of the labyrinth was by following a silk thread which he laid on the way in.
